Today Chandra is studying #galaxy NGC 3568 in the constellation Centaurus. This barred spiral galaxy is located roughly 57 million light-years from our galaxy and it's about half the size.

It's #BurgerDay! Relish this image of NGC 3628, also called the Hamburger Galaxy. To "ketchup" to this galaxy, you'd have to travel about 35 million light-years! You "mustard-mit" that would land you in quite a pickle!

G299 is the remnant of a Type Ia supernova explosion that happened thousands of years ago. Located somewhat close by, only about 16,000 light-years from Earth, this expanding debris field is more than 60 light-years across.

Today Chandra is studying a #star in Perseus. Nearby in the sky is the Little Dumbbell Nebula, M76. Once thought to consist of two separate nebulas, it's now classified as a bipolar planetary #nebula and it's located about 2,500 light-years from Earth.

Today Chandra is helping us learn more about the core of the Circinus Galaxy. Located only about 13 million light-years from Earth, Circinus is one of the closest known galaxies to our Milky Way that contains an actively growing supermassive #BlackHole.

Zeta Ophiuchi is a star with a complicated past, having likely been ejected from its birthplace at more than 150,000 km/hour when its companion star was destroyed in a supernova explosion. A new look with Chandra tells more of the story of this runaway star. More in the comments...

Astronomers may have witnessed a galaxy's #BlackHole delivery system in action! A new study using Chandra & Hubble shows how a large black hole may have been delivered to the spiral #galaxy NGC 4424 by another, smaller galaxy. More in the comments!

The tiny pink dot in the center of this image is a magnetar — a type of neutron star with the most powerful known magnetic fields in the Universe. If a magnetar was located a sixth of the way to the Moon (~64,000 km), it would wipe the data from all of the credit cards on Earth!

The strength of Earth's magnetic field has a value of about 1 Gauss, while a refrigerator magnet measures about 100 Gauss. Magnetars have magnetic fields of about a million billion Gauss.

Infrared (Spitzer and Wise): NASA, JPL-CalTech
