Today Chandra is studying UGC 11537 to learn more about the #BlackHole at the galaxy's core. UGC 11537 is close to the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy, so foreground stars from our own #galaxy have popped up in this image. These foreground #stars appear quite large because they are much closer to us than to UGC 11537. The galaxy is located about 230 million light-years from Earth.

Pulsars were first discovered in 1967 and today scientists know of over 2,000 of them! PSR J1509-5850, the bright blue-white spot in the center of this image, has a tail more than 30 light-years long and it's producing an outflow of particles in a different direction.

Today Chandra is studying a bright cluster of galaxies in Aquarius. Nearby in the sky is NGC 7252, also called the "Atoms for Peace" galaxy because its hazy external structure appears somewhat like the shape of an atomic nucleus surrounded by loops of orbiting electrons.

Wow, meow! The Cat's Eye Nebula is a planetary nebula — the kind of nebula produced by stars similar to our Sun, but later in their life cycle. Stars like these eject their gaseous outer layers, creating curious and confounding shapes in the process. Happy #InternationalCatDay!

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is a located ~2,500 light-years from Earth inside a larger emission nebula. Over 20 light-years long, the trunk is a dense region of gas & dust that's being sculpted by the intense stellar winds & radiation from a massive star nearby. #WorldElephantDay

The tiny pink dot in the center of this image is a magnetar — a type of neutron star with the most powerful magnetic fields in the Universe. If a magnetar was located a sixth of the way to the Moon (~64,000 km), it would wipe the data from all of the credit cards on Earth! (1/2)

The twin spacecraft both carry a golden record, bringing time capsules of 1977 Earth into interstellar space. Though not vinyl, these records hold sounds and images from Earth. See and hear them here: https://go.nasa.gov/3vVKzyL #VinylRecordDay

Today Chandra is studying a galaxy in Camelopardalis. Nearby in the sky is NGC 1569, a galaxy sparkling with the light of millions of young stars. NGC 1569 is making stars about 100x faster than our Milky Way and has been doing so almost constantly for the last 100 million years.

There are actually two nebulae in this HubbleClassic view!

Appearing as one, they’re collectively called NGC 248. They reside in the Small Magellanic Cloud – a satellite galaxy to our Milky Way.

NGC 248 is ~60 light-years long and 20 light-years wide

Today marks one month since NASAWebb’s first image reveal!

On the right is that image from the infrared observatory, showing galaxy cluster SMACS 0723.

Hubble’s view on the left demonstrates the complementary nature of the telescopes across a broader range of wavelengths!
