How massive can a normal star be?

Estimates made from distance, brightness and standard solar models had given one star in the open cluster Pismis 24 over 200 times the mass of our Sun, making it one of the most massive stars known. This star is the brightest object located just above the gas front in the featured image. Close inspection of images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, however, have shown that Pismis 24-1 derives its brilliant luminosity not from a single star but from three at least. Component stars would still remain near 100 solar masses, making them among the more massive stars currently on record.

What would happen if there were no Moon?

The most immediate effect (other than the lack of moonlight, of course) would be on the Earth’s tides. With only the Sun’s gravitational influence, the difference between high and low tides would be reduced dramatically – as would tidal drag, which slows the Earth down at a rate adding about 0.002 seconds to the length of a day each century. Long term, the effects would be far more serious.

The climate of the Earth is sensitively dependent on the 23.5° tilt of the Earth’s axis, and without the stabilising presence of our relatively huge Moon, the gravity of the other planets would produce big changes in this angle – as it does with Mars, whose tilt changes by 60° over a few million years.

What is a Blue Moon?

The moon can sometimes appear reddish especially during eclipses. But what we call a Blue Moon has nothing to do with its color.

There are actually two different types of Blue Moon.

1) Monthly Blue Moon:-
The second full Moon in a calendar month that contains two full Moons.

2) Seasonal Blue Moon:-
The third full Moon in a season (the period between an equinox and a solstice, or vice versa) that contains four full Moons. This is the original scientific definition.

The August 22 full moon will be considered a Seasonal Blue Moon. In this case, it will be the third full moon of summer.

The moon can actually appear blue under certain circumstances, such as when ash is present in the atmosphere from fires or volcanic eruptions.

But blue-colored moons in photos like this one are usually made using filters or in a post-processing program such as Photoshop. Usually … but not always.
