check out the color shifting action on this golden tortoise beetle! The way light reflects off of fluid in the layers of its exoskeleton causes its gold appearance. When subjected to external stresses, or disturbed in any manner, the golden tortoise beetle has the ability to dry up its fluid, changing its color to a dark red.

The black snake (or Pantherophis obsoletus) is a non-venomous species of Colubridae found in central North America. They live in a variety of habitats; some overlap each other. These snakes are excellent climbers and spend time in trees. They live in habitats ranging from a rocky hillside to flat farmland.

Beautiful queen bee hatching
Who is the most well-known member of a honey bee colony? The queen bee, of course. The most important individual in the hive, every part of colony life revolves around her. She can not live without the other members of the hive. But, a colony will not survive for long without her either. The honey bee queen is the mother of every bee in the hive. From egg-laying to colony communication, she fills a role that no other colony member can.

This is 'The Humanity Globe' - an awesome visualization showing the world according to population density. Its creator, Tyler Morgan-Wall, used data from the Gridded Population of the World collection (GPWv4) which models human population based on census reports, and the United Nation's World Population Prospects report.

This ciliate is called Blepharisma, and apparently it isn’t an expert parallel parker.

Blepharisma are naturally pink because of Blepharismin, which is a pigment that makes Blepharisma really sensitive to light and protects their DNA from visible and far-UV radiations.

It would appear that these pink pigments were an evolutionary advantage and enabled them to survive since they act as a reflective shield against far-UV radiations!

Look, the lip pads of manatees are movable! Unobvious, yes. And that's surprising.

Animals can grab various objects with them. Usually, they grab the vegetation they eat. But here, the manatee seems to have mistaken the green hose for a plant.

Now how do you develop two little hands on the manatee's nose?
