There are approximately 46 known species of frogfish and each is uniquely beautiful. Introducing one of the lesser-known marine animals in the world, the Hairy Frogfish.

Among many strange characteristics, the one that sticks out (pun intended) is a special extra-long spine on the dorsal fin called the esca. Imitating a wriggling worm and used to lure in prey and other fish. Once they crawl in close they suck their meal up whole with a mouth that can expand 12 times it’s normal size! The esca is also able to regenerate if injured or even lost.

Reticulated pythons are the largest snakes in the world. They can grow up to 28.5 feet long and weigh 350 pounds. They regularly grow upwards of 16-feet long and generally have a “complex diamond-shaped pattern” running along their backs.

Though reticulated pythons are generally considered aggressive, this one has a reputation of being an “absolute sweetheart.”

This Portuguese Man O' War is known for its painful sting
They float on the surface of the ocean due to their gas-filled bladder, which gives them a balloon-like appearance. Even after they have washed ashore, their sting is still excruciatingly painful

motherly instinct in action This bird (known as a Vanellus Chilensis) puts her life in jeopardy to protect her eggs. The Vanellus Chilensis is a very aggressive, and smart bird, especially when they have a nest. To protect the nest, decoy nest are created to fool predators while the real nest is hidden

Take a gander at Lake Berryessa, also known as “The Glory Hole,” located in Napa County, California. Lake Berryessa works similarly to the drain in a sink. When water reaches a certain level it spills into the drain to prevent overflow. After spilling into the hole, water takes a 200 foot drop into a narrowing pipe and runs hundreds of feet to the other side of the Monticello Dam. After that the water spills out into Putah Creek, where it eventually flows into the Yolo Bypass. This process is a rare occurrence as the Glory Hole has only been used about two dozen times since it was first built in the 1950s
