In the 19th century, the atheist George Hal had an argument with some believers about whether giants once roamed the earth.

Deciding that people would believe anything written in the Bible, Hal carved a statue of a giant man, made it appear petrified and buried it in the ground in Cardiff, New York.

He waited over a year before unearthing the "Cardiff Giant", charging people money for the chance to come and see it, and by the time he was exposed, he had made $430,000 in today's money.
