#Ethiopian Government Debt Reaches Birr 2.4 Trillion From both internal and external sources, the debt of the government reaches Birr 2.4 trillion. The internal debt amounts to 1.14 trillion, from 918.9 billion last year. Similarly, external debt reaches 1.29 trillion, from 1.01 trillion last year.
On June 2021, the amount of debt has increased by Birr 221.5 billion only because of the appreciation of the exchange rate. Even though the government paid Birr 73.1 billion for external lenders this year, about 14% more than what was paid last year, it still amounts to less than last year’s total due to the current exchange rate.
