Why do people buy crackpot conspiracy theories?

Science has finally cracked the mystery - belief in conspiracy theories isn’t driven by ignorance, or isolation, or insanity. It’s something far more common — and way, way scarier.

2023-01-26 20:59:01 Making authentic Tyrian purple dye starts with extracting a murex snail gland.

After a series of painstaking steps, Tunisian dye maker Mohamed Ghassen Nouira turns as much as 45 kilograms of snails into a single gram of pure Tyrian purple extract.

When he's done, he can sell it for $2,700. Some retailers sell a gram of the pigment for over $3,000. In comparison, 5 grams of synthetic Tyrian purple costs under $4.

So, why is real Tyrian purple so hard to make? And is that why it's so expensive?

From Ivan the Terrible to Elon Musk, there seems to be a well-documented pattern of assholes who wind up in charge, Insider’s Aki Ito writes.

Surely, we think, they must have gotten ahead — at least in part — because of their despicable personalities.

Even worse, all the cutthroat role models we're surrounded by at work make us hesitant about being nice ourselves, Ito says.

We worry that the bullies and backstabbers will eat us for lunch as they march their way up the corporate ladder.

So, Ito asks, are jerks more likely to get ahead at work? Read more here.

2023-01-25 21:06:01 Cochineals are tiny bugs that live on prickly pear cactuses. The acid in their guts makes a red dye used in textiles, cosmetics, and foods like M&Ms and Yoplait yogurt.

Indigenous people across Latin America traded it for thousands of years. It can be found on the walls of archeological sites, in priceless paintings, and in the robes of kings.

But today, Peru dominates the market, and Mexico’s cochineal farms are disappearing.

We met a few of the country’s last farmers trying to keep the ancient tradition alive.

2023-01-25 17:26:01 Indian authorities have provided new details about a Putin-linked Russian lawmaker and sausage company owner who mysteriously fell to his death from an Indian hotel where his travel companion died just two days prior.
