New Canada-Rainbow Railroad Partnership To Welcome LGBTQI+ Refugees

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new government of Canada partnership with the non-profit organization Rainbow Railroad to welcome LGBTQI+ refugees from around the globe.

Rainbow Railroad will seek to identify LGBTQI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex) persons and their families who are escaping violence and persecution.

Following this they will then recommend LGBTQI+ refugees to the Government of Canada for resettlement through the Government-Assisted Refugees (GAR) Program. Jump ToCanada Announces 10x Increase In New Refugees Under SAHs

Rainbow Railroad will build on the trust and knowledge they have previously built with LGBTQI+ communities across the globe in order to assist more LGBTQI+ persons and their families find safety in Canada via their new position as an LGBTQI+ referral partner within the GAR Program.

This new role is part of Rainbow Railroad’s expansion into the GAR Program. The agreement will also serve as a model for other resettlement countries who are looking for ways to give members of LGBTQI+ communities with enhanced protections.

Rainbow Railroad is an international organization that operates on a not-for-profit basis and provides assistance to members of the LGBTQI+ community who are being persecuted due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or sex characteristics.

It has helped tens of thousands of LGBTQI+ refugees from all over the globe find a way to flee violence and persecution and find a route to safety, including right here in Canada.

The government of Canada gives financial support to organizations that provide settlement services and have programs that is open to diverse immigrants.

This is done to ensure that LGBTQI+ refugee newcomers and their families have the same opportunities for success as other refugees after they arrive in Canada.

In addition to this new partnership with Rainbow Railroad, the federal government already provides support to LGBTQI+ people from around the world who are at risk and are referred to Canada by the United Nations Refugee Agency and other referral organizations, as well as those arriving in Canada through the Rainbow Refugee Assistance Partnership.

This support is in addition to the support that is provided to LGBTQI+ people from around the world who are at risk and are provided through this new partnership with Rainbow Railroad. What is Government-Assisted Refugees (GAR) Program?Government-Assisted Refugees (GAR) Program of Canada offers resettlement to refugees referred by United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) or any other identified referral organization.

Individuals meeting the definition of refugees can register for refugee status with the UNHCR or state authorities.

Government of Canada provides financial support to Government-Assisted Refugees (GARs) while they are adjusting to life in Canada.

GARs receive support
a) for up to 1 year from the date they arrive in Canada or
b) until they are able to support themselves (whichever happens first)
