Today, April 11, 2023, Julian Assange begins his fifth year in Belmarsh, a maximum security prison in London.

Four years ago, he was forcibly removed from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and sent to Belmarsh where he continues to wait for possible extradition to the United States. Despite being held in a supermax prison, often in solitary confinement, Assange has not been charged with any crime. The 51-year old has spent nearly a third of his adult life in some form of detention.

In May 2019, Nils Melzer, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, visited Assange in prison. He later concluded that Assange’s treatment did in fact constitute psychological torture. In February 2020, Doctors for Assange demanded an end to his torture and neglect. Since then, Assange’s physical and mental states have continued to deteriorate and no relevant authority has acted.

Assange’s continued detention and torture come without his having been convicted of any crime. In short, his “offense” boils down to having published true and accurate information which exposed US war crimes.

To this date, no one involved in those war crimes has been arrested, punished, or charged except for Julian Assange.

The World Council for Health stands with Julian Assange and demands an end to his torture and imprisonment. Global powers must never play games with human lives, whether that be in war or with an individual like Julian Assange.

Live facial recognition cameras are a form of mass surveillance, human rights campaigners have warned, as the Met police press ahead with its use of the “gamechanging” technology.

Britain’s largest police force said the technology could be used to catch terrorists and find missing people after research published on Wednesday (April 5) reported a “substantial improvement” in its accuracy.

The research, carried out by the National Physical Laboratory, found there were minimal discrepancies for race and sex when the technology was used at certain settings. It was commissioned by the Met and South Wales police in late 2021 after fierce public debate about police use of the technology.

However, the human rights groups Liberty, Big Brother Watch and Amnesty have warned that the technology is oppressive and “turns us into walking ID cards.”

"We could be seeing a whole new era of biometric surveillance in public life," Madeleine Stone told ITV News, speaking on the dangers of live facial recognition

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr on Wednesday (April 5) filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission, positioning him to oppose President Biden for the 2024 Democratic nomination.

Though he hasn't formally announced his candidacy, the 69-year-old Kennedy's previous messaging about a possible run gave some insight into his potential themes:

"My top priority [would] be to end the corrupt merger between state and corporate power that has ruined our economy, shattered the middle class, polluted our landscapes and waters, poisoned our children, and robbed us of our values and freedoms."

Last month, Kennedy asked supporters to help him decide if he should run or not, directing them to visit his website, TeamKennedy.com, to volunteer or donate money. "If it looks like I can raise the money and mobilize enough people to win, I’ll jump in the race," he said via Twitter.

Biden hasn't announced his own re-election bid yet. Kennedy joins author Marianne Williamson, who's taking another shot at the Democratic nomination after a failed but entertaining 2020 run.

Media coverage of Kennedy's filing uniformly emphasized his activism against vaccinations. Combining the deadpan tone of a real journalist with the language of a partisan hack, Jake Tapper assured CNN's audience that Kennedy is a "quack."
