2021-05-12 15:54:44 Aptly titled Decoy pricing, the advocates of this ploy argue that the middle option encourages buyers to move up from the lower Rs 5 lakh variant to the middle variant; luring them in with 8 new features at a premium of Rs 2 lakh. Those looking to buy the middle variant will be tempted on the other hand to opt for the high-end variant, as they can get the full range of features the car has to offer by paying an additional lakh.

The middle variant is essentially a decoy. It is primarily meant not to generate sales for the company but to nudge the consumer away from the lower-priced variant towards the higher-priced one.

2021-05-12 15:53:45 What’s decoy pricing and how is it influencing your purchases?

Say, you are looking to buy a car. The lower variant costs you Rs 5 lakhs and comes with 15 special features. The high-end variant, on the other hand, will cost you 8 lakhs and comes loaded with 30 features. The higher variant has double the features but is expensive by about 60%.

Which of the two will you prefer?

What if the company is to introduce a third option in the midst; a middle-of-the-road variant priced at Rs 7 lakhs with 23 features? Will you opt for the middle variant?

If your answer is yes, then you have fallen for one of the oldest marketing tricks in the book.

2021-05-11 15:54:31 How the Baader-Meinhof complex robs you of sound investment sense?

When was the last time you picked up a song, a word or a term, and found that the term kept surfacing all around you? Before you read some grand designs of fate into it, know that there is a cognitive bias that explains this phenomenon. It is called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon or the frequency illusion. What’s worse this cognitive bias can lead you into shoddy investments if you aren’t mindful. This phenomenon can persuade us into investing in a stock or virtual currency as we start attaching a notion of inherent value to the instrument simply because we come across its repeated references.

Have you experienced this in your investment journey?

2021-05-10 16:04:18 Twitter: Predicting the future one tweet at a time.

Welcome to the Twitterverse
Twitter has over 192 million active users who utilize the platform on a daily basis. A single tweet has the power to influence not just Twitter users, but everyone who uses social media in general. They have the potential to affect mass sentiment which in turn can affect the stock market.

Twitter’s new overlord
Take for instance SpaceX and Tesla Chief Elon Musk’s tweeting patterns. In January, his Twitter bio featured #bitcoin following which Bitcoin’s value jumped by more than 20% to $38,566. When he tweeted “GameStonk” in relation to the publicly traded company GameStop, its valuation skyrocketed to over $10 billion in after-hours trading.

Twitter as a tool
A recent study revealed that Twitter sentiment provided information pertaining to forthcoming analyst recommendation changes and analyst target price changes. Large moves in stock prices were influenced by information shared prematurely on Twitter. Novo Nordisk’s clinical trials of a drug were leaked on Twitter which led to an instant fall in prices of their stock due to its supposed ineffectiveness.

2021-04-13 10:45:00 Job change and your financial health

Credit Score: In a career transition that lasts longer than you predicted, you might get behind the credit card or EMI payments. This will impact your credit score.

Your lifetime earning potential: Changing jobs at optimum durations might have a significant positive impact on your lifetime earning potential. Forbes reports that the earnings loss of staying at 1 company for too long is bigger than people intuitively expect. People staying at 1 company for 2+ years on average might earn 50% less over their lifetime compared to people who change jobs more often.

Insurance: When one’s health insurance is tied with one’s employer, changing jobs could risk health coverage.

EPFs: Employee Provident Funds offer a convenient route to people to plan for retirement and maintain a life insurance policy. Hopping jobs will also require readjustments on these fronts.

What are some of the things you consider while deciding on a job change?
