A call to return to serious and respectful dialogue between US, EU, NATO, Russia and Ukraine alleviating threat of war

Statement From the Friends of Crimea Club, USA

Since 2014 and the US backed coup d’etat in Ukraine, the United States and its allies have imposed increasingly damaging economic and political sanctions on Russia that have had an outsized impact on the citizens of Crimea. This, along with the ongoing war against separatists in the Donbass region, NATO war games in the Black Sea, threats of invasion from Ukraine, “test” missile launches from Romania against Crimean territory and a steady beat of war threats from American media, has made normal life in that part of the world virtually impossible.

Most Americans are vague, at best, on everything about Crimea; its precise location, its population, the make-up of its citizenry, their cultures, their relationships with Russia and with Ukraine and, perhaps most importantly, their history – recent and past. It is the hope of the Friends of Crimea USA to address that prejudicial information gap and to oppose a misguided American foreign policy that is pushing that region of the world toward an unwanted and unnecessary war.

Specifically, the Friends of Crimea USA encourages the immediate recognition of the right to self-determination of the Crimean people and a return to serious and respectful dialogue between the US, EU, NATO, Russia and Ukraine that would lead to a diplomatic resolution of the Ukraine/Donbass impasse thus alleviating the threat of war among the parties, a war that would inevitably engulf Crimea.
