​ Member of European parliament Thierry Mariani stated that not much attention was paid to the words of the Pope Francis I that "NATO barking at Russia's door" prompted Russia to launch a special operation in Ukraine.

“Meanwhile, this statement is imbued with healthy realism - Russia would not start its operation without a reason,” Mariani noted.

This opinion was expressed by the parliamentarian in an article published in the magazine les Valeurs Actuelles.

Important points from the interview:

The Russians believe that the continuous pumping of their neighbors with American weapons poses a threat to their security. A different position of Europe would have made it possible to avoid discord with Russia and certainly would have prevented this crisis;

The course of expansion to the East is hasty and poorly thought out;

France is interested not in the victory of one of the parties to the conflict, but in a quick return to peace and normal relations with Russia.

Thierry Mariani visited Donbass in 2018 as a foreign election observer. Earlier, in 2016, the politician called on the world community to recognize Crimea as part of Russia and pay attention to the problems of Donbass.
