2021-04-03 13:11:35 IELTS Writing Task 2: ignore the word "academic"

Many people are confused by the idea that they are doing the IELTS academic writing test. They think this means that they need to use "academic" words, or that IELTS writing is similar to university academic writing.

All of this is wrong. Here's why:

Examiners are not looking for "academic" words. There is nothing in the scoring criteria that tells examiners to do this. Instead, examiners are told to look for a wide range of vocabulary, collocations, and some less common vocabulary.

IELTS writing (especially task 2) is more like a high school writing task, rather than a university assignment. In a university assignment, for example, you will never see the question "do you agree or disagree?". At university you are expected to use research as the basis of your writing, but in the IELTS test you only have your own ideas and opinions. You are even told that you can use examples from your own personal experience in IELTS writing task 2.This isn't very "academic"!

So, it's best to ignore the word "academic". Ignore any advice that relates to university academic writing; IELTS writing has its own 'rules' and requirements.

Discuss both views

Q:Some people believe government should spend money on building train and subway lines to reduce traffic congestion. Others think that building more and wider roads is the better way to reduce traffic congestion. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Answer:

Traffic congestion is the bane of motorists’ lives, whether it is the daily bottleneck during the commute to work or the slow-moving lines when taking the kids to school. While there have been many calls for increased and improved railway and subway services so as to mitigate the problem, some argue that the construction of larger roads is a better alternative in the long term.

Great train and subway systems are generally seen as effective in alleviating traffic congestion. Obviously, these modes of public transportation are capable of moving large numbers of people as well as meeting the needs of the majority of passengers. Two other advantages of trains are punctuality and safety. Trains are usually on time, regardless of the traffic level. In some cases, however, missing one train or one stop would probably cause some inconvenience for commuters. Trains and subways are also generally safer than cars.

On the other hand, some traffic planners rely more on road widening to ease congestion. They point out that with an increase in road size, traffic jams could possibly be reduced. In the long run, however, the wider the road, the more drivers it attracts; therefore, cars would soon fill the road and traffic would grind to a halt again.

In conclusion, effective and lasting solutions to the problem of traffic congestion will perhaps involve both improved train and subway services as well as wider roads. Be that as it may, if at least one of these measures is a success, traffic will be eased.

Diqqat savol

AQSh ning eng sovuq mintaqasida bir uyda qotillik yuz beradi. Bu uyga Sherlok Holms zudlik bilan yetib keladi. Qarasa bo'm bo'sh xonada shiftga odam osilgan (shift bilan pol orasida 3 metr masofa bor edi) ekan. Eng qizig'i bu odamning tagida hech narsa yoq edi. Lekin uning tagi, ya'ni pol ho'l edi. Sherlok Holms "Bu odam joniga qasd qilgan" deydi va uning fikri toʻgʻri bo'lib chiqadi.

Diqqat Savol: Sherlok Holms buni qayerdan bilgan?
