 Hi guys

Another grammar post.

A very useful grammar structure that is particularly handy for expanding on ideas is the conditional structure.

Conditionals are basically sentences that use the conjunction 'if' (there are a few other types including 'unless' sentences).

There are five main kinds of conditionals. These are known as zero, first, second, third and mixed. The good news is that for IELTS essays, you probably only need to learn two or three of them.

The structure for the zero conditional is 'If' + S + present tense, S + present tense. This structure is used to talk about facts. Here's an example zero conditional sentence.

'If a country is poor, there is usually more crime.'

The structure for 1st conditional is 'If' + S + present tense, S + future. This structure is used to talk about cause and effect relationships. For example;

'If a country doesn't invest in education, it's population will not be able to escape poverty.

In rare cases, you may need 2nd conditional. The structure for this is 'If' + S + past, S + would verb. This one is used to describe imaginary situations. For example;

If his country had more vaccines, it would be able to deal with CoVid-19 better.

Honestly, trying to use 3rd and Mixed conditionals in essays is a recipe for mistakes. People often learn these fancy structures and try to force them into their essays. I've never seen them used naturally - not even once. In other words, don't even try to use these for your essays.

In summary, conditionals are a great way to show advanced grammar ability and expand on ideas. Just use the basic conditionals though as the complex ones will get you in trouble.
