Why Short Stories Are Best for English Learning?

You get more time to focus on individual words. When a text is short, you can devote more time to learning how every single word is used and what importance it has in the piece.

You can read a whole story in one sitting. Attention spans are very important for learning, and the ability to finish a story gives you more time to digest it. Short stories are designed to give you maximum information with minimal effort.

It is best for consistency. It is far easier to read one story every day than trying to read a big novel that never seems to end.

You can share them easily in a group. Since short stories can be read in a single setting, they are ideal for book clubs and learning circles. Most of the time these groups do not work because members have no time to read. Short stories are the perfect solution.

You can focus more on ideas and concepts. Language is less about words and more about the meaning behind them. If you spend all your time learning vocabulary and grammar, you will never be able to fluently speak a language because you will have little to talk about. These short stories give you the opportunity to understand big ideas in context.

Do not rush to finish your essay

After writing your conclusion, you might think that you have completed your essay. Wrong. Before you consider this a finished work, you must pay attention to all the small details.

Check the order of your paragraphs. Your strongest points should be the first and last paragraphs within the body, with the others falling in the middle. Also, make sure that your paragraph order makes sense. If your essay is describing a process, such as how to make a great chocolate cake, make sure that your paragraphs fall in the correct order.

Review the instructions for your essay, and review what you have written. Reread your paper and check to see if it makes sense. Make sure that sentence flow is smooth and add phrases to help connect thoughts or ideas. Check your essay for grammar and spelling mistakes.

Ideas about "Environment"

Impact of Humans on the Environment

The increasing world population is putting pressure on natural resources.
Fossil fuels like oil and gas are running out.
We are destroying wildlife habitats.
We have cut down enormous areas of rainforest.
This has led to the extinction of many species of animals and plants.

Solutions to Environment Problems

Governments could introduce laws to limit emissions from factories.
They should invest in renewable energy from solar, wind or water power.
They could impose “green taxes” on drivers and airline companies.
Government campaigns should promote recycling.
Natural areas and wild animals should be protected.
Individuals should also try to be greener.
We should take fewer flights abroad for holidays.
We should take public transport rather than driving.
We should choose products with less packaging.
We should recycle as much as possible.

Agree / Disagree

Q: Some people think that the best way to increase road safety is to increase the minimum legal age for driving cars or riding motorbikes. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

Some individuals believe raising the minimum legal age for driving cars or riding motorbikes is the most effective method of increasing road safety. While I accept that this policy is good to some extent, I believe it is not the best because there are much better measures to reduce traffic accidents.

It might be a good idea to increase the minimum age required for driving because of some reasons. Firstly, since younger people are usually less mature and less responsible with their manners, they might not be aware of the importance of following the rules. Therefore, it is reasonable to ban them from travelling on the street to prevent them from breaking the law and causing accidents. Secondly, as older people are more experienced, they can know how to react quickly to handle dangerous situations on the road, while younger ones might not be able to. To illustrate, if the brakes of a car suddenly stop working, a young driver might panic, and accidents are more likely to occur.

However, I would argue that there are much better methods of ensuring road safety. The first one is to have stricter punishments for driving offenders. For example, people who break traffic rules should be required to pay huge fines or be banned permanently from commuting on the street. This makes commuters more likely to respect the law, and traffic accidents can be limited. Another solution is to encourage people to use public transport rather than private vehicles. This can be done by reducing the price and increasing the frequency of buses and tubes to make it more convenient for users.

In conclusion, I believe apart from increasing the legal age for driving, there are more effective ways to make sure that travelling on the street is safe for everyone.

Confidence Climb

Self-doubt means you don’t believe you can get the score you want. IELTS is a staircase to the top of a mountain.

Overconfidence means you believe you can get the score you want even though your English is not good enough. You think you’re already on top of the mountain - but you’re not.

Confidence means you know that it is possible to get the score you want if you work hard. It will be hard. It will take time. But you can do it if you take it step by step.

To deal with self-doubt try:

1. Focusing on what you can do - can you write topic sentences?
2. Do the same activity over and over until you are good at it.
3. Watching a video on youtube about ‘Growth Mind-set’ or ‘Grit.’
4. Don’t measure yourself by where you were yesterday. You won’t grow an inch in a day.
5. Look back at your English work from years ago - then you’ll see the growth.
6. Change your routine - work late at night, drink/don’t drink coffee, work alone/in public, work naked, do new activities - change it up!
7. Relax with English - listen to a song, read a comic, find some memes on instagram. Make English fun again - not an enemy for a minute.

To deal with overconfidence try:

1. Doing a practice test.
2. Asking someone you trust about your English
3. Doing a google voice search - can google understand you?
4. Reading something from an English newspaper Listening to a Ted Talk
5. Doing a timed writing test and comparing with a sample answer

Bar chart

Q: The charts below show the performance of a bus company in terms of punctuality, both actual and target (what actually happened compared to what the company was trying to achieve), and the number of complaints and passengers.

Answer:

The first chart shows the actual and target percentage of buses, from a particular bus company, that arrived at the destination on time, between 1999 and 2003. Meanwhile, the second chart shows how many complaints were made during the same period.

It is clear that while the expected target of buses arriving on time decreased over the years, there was no clear pattern in the percentage of buses that actually arrived on time. Additionally, the number of complaints from their passengers increased throughout the period.

In 1999, the company’s target of buses arriving on time stood at 86%, which was 1% higher than what was actually achieved. Although the target remained unchanged one year later, the percentage of on-time arrivals dropped by nearly 3%. By 2003, this company had reduced its target of on-time arrivals to just over 84%, while the actual figure had witnessed considerable growth to about 85%.

Starting at approximately 7% of total passengers in 1999, the number of complaints made by passengers rose significantly before experiencing a slight decline to just over 8% in 2001. This figure then grew considerably two years later, with about 12% of passengers complaining in the last year.
