Advantage / Disadvantage

Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in a large city?

Answer:

Nowadays, the populations of most countries have grown, and many people live in large cities. However for some people, choosing to live in a large city could be a hard decision, as that has its advantages as well as its disadvantages. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the argument.

On the one hand, there are certain advantages to live in a large city. First of all, living in in a large metropolis is highly convenient. Amenities and facilities such as shops, clinics, schools, pharmacies and entertainment venues are likely to be within a reasonable distance. One would not have to go far to get to those places. Secondly, large cities also provide their residents with a wide range of educational and job opportunities. Schools are of higher quality, and the standard of education is often better in large cities. Moreover, employees can receive a higher salary and have better jobs there.

Turning to the other side of the argument, living in large cities also has its downsides. With so many people living in such large cities, traffic is often very slow. During the rush hour, one could be stuck in traffic jams for hours and hours, moving an inch per minute. Furthermore, all those exhaust fumes from the hundreds of vehicles and emissions from factories make the air quite polluted, causing smog. Thus, living in a large polluted city with heavy traffic and the multitude of cars honking all day can never be peaceful and will definitely have deleterious effects on people’s health in the long run.

In summary, living in a large city can be extremely convenient. It also provides people with better education and more job opportunities. However, living in such cities could also be quite stressful, with all the noise and traffic jams resulting in unhealthy noise and air pollution.

Cause & Effect

Q: Nowadays more and more people are becoming obese and less involved in sporting activities. What do you think are the causes and possible effects of this problem?

Answer:

There is no way around the fact that obesity has become a major disease prevalent among people in many countries in recent years. There are some reasons behind this problem, and it has led to a number of adverse effects.

The primary reason for obesity is that many people have unhealthy eating habits. As the modern lifestyle is busier and more stressful than ever before, people tend to devote most of their time to work and leave no time to prepare meals for themselves. Therefore, they often trade their long-term health for the convenience of fast food. This kind of food is medically proved to contain a high proportion of fat and other harmful ingredients, which directly results in some serious health problems including obesity and various illnesses associated with it such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.

Another factor contributing to obesity is the allure of technology. In the era of modern technology, people these days can have better access to the internet through smartphones and computers. Consequently, they may be addicted to playing games or social networks such as Facebook or Instagram rather than participating in physical exercise. Due to this sedentary lifestyle, considerable amounts of calories consumed every day cannot be converted into energy but accumulated in the body, causing obesity epidemics.

In conclusion, the rise in obesity is caused by several factors including unhealthy diets and the sedentary modern lifestyle, and as a result, the rates of illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease have increased.

Bar Graph

Q: The chart below shows the amount of leisure time enjoyed by men and women of different employment status.

Answer:

The bar chart compares the amount of free time per week that males and females of five categories of employment status had between 1998 and 1999.

It is clear that men enjoyed more hours of leisure time per week than women in three out of five categories. However, only figures for women are shown in two categories, namely employed part-time and housewives.

Regarding the full-time employed, obviously men had slightly more leisure time than women, with approximately 45 hours of free time per week, compared to around 38 hours for women. Obviously, unemployed and retired people of both genders enjoyed the most hours of leisure time. Moreover, the figures for retired males and females were exactly the same as those for the unemployed, at around 85 and 78 hours of free time per
week, respectively.

Housewives enjoyed 50 hours of spare time, a little more than part-time working women who had just over 40 leisure hours each week. No data is given for men in either of these categories.
