Agree / Disagree

Q: These days, too many people maintain their health by relying on doctors and medicine, rather than by following a healthy lifestyle.

To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Answer:

Most people are aware that they need to take some responsibility for their health by eating sensibly and taking regular exercise, and many succeed in doing this. The reasons why others fail can be complex and do not necessarily mean they rely on the medical profession to keep them healthy.

The main reasons people give for being less healthy than others are often economic. People who fail to eat sensibly argue that they do not have the time or the money to cook nutritious meals. Being busy and working long hours affect people’s willingness to give up time to go to the gym or join a sports club. These may seem valid excuses, but ultimately they can lead to a sedentary lifestyle.

These days, research has shown that there is a direct link between inactivity and illness. Eating large quantities of fat, for instance, can result in weight gain, which can lead to high blood pressure or arthritis; heart-related problems are common among people who live stressful, inactive lives. Eventually, people may end up requiring prescription drugs and hospital appointments in order to treat their conditions.

It is often only after this has happened that people decide to change their diet and start exercising, usually on the advice of their doctor. Clearly, if they had always had a healthy lifestyle, they would not have needed medical treatment. However, once they do become ill, most people take steps to redress the situation as best they can.

In summary, most people try, with varying degrees of success, to live a healthy lifestyle, even if they take some time to realize how important this is. Only a small proportion of the population are unable to change, and thus rely on doctors.

Discuss both views

Q:Some people think that zoos are cruel and should be closed. However, others think that zoos are useful for protecting rare animals. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Answer:

Some people who think only in negative way might argue that zoos ought to be prohibited forever. According to them, those places are animals' jails and this also have drawbacks on environment. Others believe that zoos are capable of helping rare animals to live longer. One must consider that it can be data for youngsters to learn about wild life.

On the one hand, people whose knowledge about zoology is scarcity absolutely think this is mercilessnes about animals. This idea is kind of true. Some of the creatures are used to dwelling in forests and mountains. If they are forced to put in cages, they miss their previous homeland and families. As a result, they might lose their appetites and no longer want to live. In additional, sometimes animal keepers in the zoos are not able to give food as they actually want. It is almost forgotten to say that animals might not have fun in strange places.

However, there are more positive effects to keep them in the zoos rather than their natural homes. So many rare animals are in wild life and are threatened by brutal animals. To protect them, place which is called "zoo" is built by the government. In this way, they have opportunities, such as reproducing and living older. In my opinion, by keeping animals inside can also plays a significiant role in education. For spectacular example, there are not only animals, but informations about them are also provided.

To conclude, although feeding animals in the zoos lead to some detrimental results, such as taking their independence out of them, it has several benefits on education and saving priceless animals.

Advantage / Disadvantage

Q: In the past, most people lived in small villages where everyone knew everyone else. Nowadays, most people live in large cities where they only know a few people in their area.
What do you think were the advantages and disadvantages of living in a small community?

Answer:

Currently, it is common for the majority of people to live in cities where they might not know very many people. This is in marked contrast to the past where village life meant no one was a stranger. In my view, the main benefits of living in a village were a feeling of safety and of belonging to a tight-knit community. However, the major drawbacks were a lack of opportunities for study and employment.

Living in a small area, such as a village, means that everyone knew everyone and their business. People felt safe enough to let their children play in the street and the other adults would watch out for them as well as for their own kids. People were often proud of their roots, and there was a genuine sense of belonging, possibly because also in the past many people worked in agriculture and felt a deep connection to the land. For example, I remember my grandparents telling me how it was for them as children in their home village and how connected they felt to their neighbours.

Despite this, village life could be, and probably still is, very limited in terms of education and employment. For aspiring youth, the only chance of a good education and a career outside of farming was to leave and head to the city. To give a personal example again, when I left school in my small town I could not find any suitable job and had to move to London, a situation very common in the past and still to this day for small-town inhabitants.

In conclusion, the advantages of village life were, and to some extent still are, that of security and belonging, when no one is a stranger, everyone is a friend. Despite these obvious benefits, it is an unfortunate fact that opportunities for young people especially were and are few and far between in terms of jobs and higher education.
