2024-02-12 15:59:36 Writing Task 2 Sample Answers: How should I use them?

Writing Task 2 sample answers are great because they provide a good model for you to compare your writing with. However, simply reading lots of them is not going to make you a better writer.
Think about it this way, how many millions of people watch world-class footballers like Messi and Ronaldo every week? Does it improve their football skills? Maybe if they go and practice what they learned, but not a bit if they do nothing.

In order to really improve you have to actively use the Writing Task 2 sample answer below, not passively read them and then expect to magically improve. Follow the plan of action below.

Plan of Action

1. Read the questions, but DO NOT read the sample answers. Even taking a brief look at the question will influence your answer.

2. Attempt the answer under exam conditions.

3. Compare what you have with the sample answer.

4. Think about the ideas, the structure, the organisation, vocabulary, and grammar. It is important that you really think deeply about how the author used each of the elements above.

5. Don’t worry if your answer is very different. There are many different ways to answer a Task 2 question.

6. Go back and improve your original answer with some of the elements of the Writing Task 2 sample answer.

Opinion

Q: Some countries import a large amount of food from other parts of the world. To what extent is this a positive or negative trend?

Answer:

Instead of creating their own food commodities, governments throughout the world are increasingly dependent on food imported from other countries. It is, in my opinion, a dangerous trend that will have a detrimental influence on the agricultural sectors of countries. In the forthcoming paragraphs, I shall explain my thoughts in detail.

The disadvantage of depending on imported commodities rather than indigenous goods is that all local farmers in the nation who rely on crop sales would see a significant drop, lowering their living conditions. As a result, agricultural workers may need to seek alternative employment opportunities. Moreover, during times of crisis, nations that import products on a large scale will stop doing so, causing other countries that buy these items to suffer greatly.

Additionally, imported food is not necessarily nutritious. To preserve the food while it is transported to other parts of the world, specific chemicals are added to it. These preservatives have been linked to the development of deadly illnesses such as cancer. In addition, failing to maintain storage facilities results in significant food waste. Moreover, countries have to spend a huge amount to foreign countries in trade, and imported food is overpriced. It also has a negative impact on the nations' native cultures. In Japan, for example, where imported meals are growing more popular, people's knowledge of their own indigenous cuisines is dwindling.

However, in a way, it might also be true that importing goods can provide access to some foods that would otherwise be unavailable in certain countries. Preserved foods kept for extended periods, on the other hand, can induce a range of illnesses.

To summarise, imports are not always beneficial, and they have a negative influence on the country's agriculture sector, weakening the country's economic position.

Bar chart

Q: The chart below shows the total number of Olympic medals won by twelve different countries.

Answer:

The bar chart compares twelve countries in terms of the overall number of medals that they have won at the Olympic Games.

It is clear that the USA is by far the most successful Olympic medal winning nation. It is also noticeable that the figures for gold, silver and bronze medals won by any particular country tend to be fairly similar.

The USA has won a total of around 2,300 Olympic medals, including approximately 900 gold medals, 750 silver and 650 bronze. In second place on the all-time medals chart is the Soviet Union, with just over 1,000 medals. Again, the number of gold medals won by this country is slightly higher than the number of silver or bronze medals.

Only four other countries - the UK, France, Germany and Italy - have won more than 500 Olympic medals, all with similar proportions of each medal colour. Apart from the USA and the Soviet Union, China is the only other country with a noticeably higher proportion of gold medals (about 200) compared to silver and bronze (about 100 each).

2024-02-01 17:00:11 A Short Story on Self Confidence

There was a business executive who was deep in debt and could see no way out.

Creditors were closing in on him. Suppliers were demanding payment. He sat on the park bench, head in hands, wondering if anything could save his company from bankruptcy.

Suddenly an old man appeared before him. “I can see that something is troubling you,” he said.

After listening to the executive’s woes, the old man said, “I believe I can help you.”

He asked the man his name, wrote out a check, and pushed it into his hand saying, “Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year from today, and you can pay me back at that time.”

Then he turned and disappeared as quickly as he had come.

The business executive saw in his hand a check for $500,000, signed by John D. Rockefeller, then one of the richest men in the world!

“I can erase my money worries in an instant!” he realized. But instead, the executive decided to put the uncashed check in his safe. Just knowing it was there might give him the strength to work out a way to save his business, he thought.

With renewed optimism, he negotiated better deals and extended terms of payment. He closed several big sales. Within a few months, he was out of debt and making money once again.

Exactly one year later, he returned to the park with the uncashed check. At the agreed-upon time, the old man appeared. But just as the executive was about to hand back the check and share his success story, a nurse came running up and grabbed the old man.

“I’m so glad I caught him!” she cried. “I hope he hasn’t been bothering you. He’s always escaping from the rest home and telling people he’s John D. Rockefeller.”

And she led the old man away by the arm.

The astonished executive just stood there, stunned. All year long he’d been wheeling and dealing, buying and selling, convinced he had half a million dollars behind him.

Suddenly, he realized that it wasn’t the money, real or imagined, that had turned his life around. It was his newfound self-confidence that gave him the power to achieve anything he went after.

2024-01-30 16:28:26 Hi guys! Have you tried to run a marathon with no practice?

I hope not. You might pull a muscle.

You need to start small in order to achieve something big like that.

When it comes to learning English, what if I told you that you can understand big ideas with just a little bit of text?

You do not need to wait several years to deal with complex concepts.

Just because you are learning a language does not mean you need to limit your thinking.

Stories are all about going beyond reality. It is no wonder that they let you understand big concepts with only a little bit of reading practice.

But this works better when you’re reading better stories.

I am talking about award-winning short stories, told using language easily understood by beginners. These will not only improve your English reading comprehension but also open your mind to different worlds.

Why Short Stories Are Best for English Learning

You get more time to focus on individual words. When a text is short, you can devote more time to learning how every single word is used and what importance it has in the piece.

You can read a whole story in one sitting. Attention spans are very important for learning, and the ability to finish a story gives you more time to digest it. Short stories are designed to give you maximum information with minimal effort.

It is best for consistency. It is far easier to read one story every day than trying to read a big novel that never seems to end.

You can share them easily in a group. Since short stories can be read in a single setting, they are ideal for book clubs and learning circles. Most of the time these groups do not work because members have no time to read. Short stories are the perfect solution.

You can focus more on ideas and concepts. Language is less about words and more about the meaning behind them. If you spend all your time learning vocabulary and grammar, you will never be able to fluently speak a language because you will have little to talk about. These short stories give you the opportunity to understand big ideas in context.
