 Hi guys

Just a few quick tips for your writing.

1. Try to avoid using 'some' unnecessarily. This is a word we use all the time in speaking but only in cases when you need to explain that you don't mean 'all' in formal writing. In other words, it's ok to write 'some people believe' (as in not all), but not ok to say 'some friends' ('some' does not affect meaning significantly).

2. Make sure you don't overuse capitals. I often see people use capitals to refer to subjects in school like history and science. We use capitals for the names of departments in a real university etc, but not for just describing school subjects generally. Also, don't write new sentences with "However, People think..." (no capital on people).

3. Don't put a comma before 'that'. Sometimes we put commas before 'which' in non-defining relatives clauses, but it's almost always a mistake when I see ', that'.

4. Don't always explore both sides of the issue if you can't think of much good stuff for both sides. If you feel strongly about one side and you have good supporting reasons, a strong opinion (one-sided) essay is best. This only applies to questions that don't require you to look at both sides (so not 'discuss both views' or 'outweigh' essays).

5. Make sure your ideas are well developed. Always have a minimum of two sentences for every idea in a body paragraph. We have to extend on our ideas to get a decent TA and CC score.
