Q:Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Answer:
As we are living in the century of democracy and gender equality, I think men and women should have equal educational opportunities. However, I do not agree that there should be a separation of genders while choosing university applicants.
First of all, receiving students based on their gender would be against the UN gender equality rights. According to it, people should not be offended and separated because of their sexes. Therefore, no matter whether they are male or female, student numbers on any course depend on the applications that the institution receives and performances of each applicants in the exam. University should base its admission to qualification of person’s knowledge not his/her gender. By doing it, I believe that both men and women would have the same opportunities, and the competition would be fair, too. For example, let us say there are only 20 places for female applicants. Not accepting 21st applicant girl with high grades in favour of a male applicant who had lower grades from the exam, indeed, would be so unfair. In other words, both male and female students should compete with each other to be accepted for the course.
Second of all, every person has his/her personal preference of choosing job. Some types of occupations are more popular among boys not girls. For instance, my faculty at the university is “Management in IT service” and it is not very popular between females. That is why we have only 4 female students and 21 male students. As we cannot force men to choose nursery courses, it would be unrealistic if a university wants to fill this kind of courses with equal number of girls and boys.
To sum up, universities should not accept participants according to their gender as it will be unfair and may have repercussions
