Agree / Disagree

Q: Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

Every year, thousands of people apply for various courses in universities. However, it is sometimes argued that universities should have equal numbers of male and female students in every course. I completely disagree with this idea.

First, some subjects are more suited to, and have more interest from, one gender than the other. For example, technology courses often have more male student applications, while those who apply for nursing courses are mostly female. Also computer science traditionally attracts more interest from male students, while female students tend to have more interest in language courses or other humanities programs. Therefore, it would be difficult and impractical to place equal number of male and female students for all tertiary courses.

Second, it would not be fair if admission to university courses depended not on individual ability but on the applicant’s gender. Universities should base the decisions to accept applications according to exam score and curriculum vitae. That gives all students, irrespective of their gender, more motivation to study hard at school and get good scores. If a male student fails to be accepted for a university course because of a limited quota for male students, it will be unfair and it will cause much controversy. In addition, if universities just choose their students according to their gender, it will be counterproductive and detrimental to their reputation. This is because the quality of education is likely to decrease and the qualifications given by those universities will be of a lower standard.

In conclusion, I believe that applications for universities should be accepted according to the student’s ability and talents instead of their gender. It would be unfair and would lead to several difficulties to have an equal number of male and female students in every university course.
