Good afternoon from London. We have rounded up some of the latest stories on the war in Ukraine for you to read.

Free to read: When Russian president Vladimir Putin put strategic nuclear forces on high alert on Sunday, western capitals took it seriously. However Putin’s order, which applies to Russia’s traditional nuclear deterrent and its new hypersonic missiles, does not mean he is ordering preparations for a nuclear strike.

Talks have begun between Ukrainian and Russian officials on the Belarusian border. Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky’s office said the negotiations were aimed at ensuring an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.

The UAE joined China and India in abstaining from voting on a US resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in a public display of Abu Dhabi’s frustrations with US policies.

Have you been wondering what motivates Vladimir Putin? Our Moscow bureau chief Max Seddon has profiled Russia’s leader here.

‘If Russia gains sway over Ukraine, it will carve out a new sphere of influence in Europe. Western liberal democracy will be pitted against not communist but nationalist authoritarianism.’ Read our editorial board’s view on the conflict: a tragedy for Ukraine and all of Europe.

How will Russia’s invasion of Ukraine hit the global economy? Soaring energy prices alone could tip the world into a second recession in three years. (free to read)

Here’s what we know about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine so far:

Russian troops have been pouring into Ukraine on three different fronts after Vladimir Putin demanded Kyiv's army lay down its weapons. (free to read)

Off the back of this, Russia’s stock market dropped at a record-breaking pace, with the Moex index falling 45% at one point. Oil prices also rose to more than $103 per barrel as the conflict in Ukraine means more potential for sanctions that will cut Russia’s energy and resources out of global supply chains.

What is Russia’s end game here? This is one question western governments will be asking. Our european diplomatic correspondent and former Moscow bureau chief Henry Foy has some thoughts.

Meanwhile, ordinary Ukrainians are rushing to evacuate and find a route to safety. But many have vowed to stay to fight. This incredibly striking photo essay captures how they’ve been preparing, with paramilitary schools, courses in tactical medicine and guerrilla drills. (free to read)

Donald Trump’s social media app has arrived. Truth Social debuted a turbulent launch this week with hopes to fight the ‘tyranny of Big Tech’ after the ex-president was banned from multiple social media platforms following the Capitol riots on January 6 last year.

We had our Covid-19 quarantine ‘pods’; what if we migrated the concept to our work teams? Smaller siloed teams could have benefits, but we should ask ourselves ‘who have you not emailed recently — and try to get in touch soon,’ Gillian Tett writes.

We'll be back tomorrow with the latest news.
