Antonio Pigafetta was Magellan's chronicler and documented his voyage to the New World in his "Account of the First Circumnavigation of the World" of 1525.
"At last we reached 49°30' latitude in the direction of the South Pole. One day we saw a naked man of gigantic stature on the shore. When the giant saw us and the captain, he was extremely surprised and began to make signs by lifting his finger up, as if to declare that we had appeared from heaven. He was so tall that our heads reached only to his waist".
And because the giants were good-natured toward the new arrivals, they began to be taken quite quickly by shooting the naughty ones.
