Admissions With Umid: Making a College List
•
How should I make my college list?
When settling on the list of universities, consider factors such as cost, campus size, location, etc. Financial matters should take the utmost priority in your decision-making, so you should familiarize yourself with essential terminology such as “need-blind” and “need-aware” admissions. Concerning your preferences, you might be a person who feels attracted to city life with its bustling culture. Alternatively, you might want to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of a mountainous campus. When it comes to the campus size, places like Yale and Williams might be on the other ends of the spectrum. The former is a large research university with departments spread across the city of New Haven. The latter is a small liberal arts college located in rural Williamstown. As preferences are very individual, it is essential to compare your expectations with what a particular campus can offer you.
In addition:
It is widely established that you should split your college list into three parts: reach (prestigious and hard to get into), target (less prestigious but you have a decent chance to get into), safety (not that prestigious but very likely to get into). In this case, if you get rejected from all of your reach schools (Yale, Harvard, Yale-NUS, NYUAD), you might get into your target or safety choices.
• How do I know if the university gives financial aid to international students?
Research! As I mentioned in my previous posts, Google is your best friend. Usually, universities explicitly state on their website if they offer a generous financial aid program for international students. If the university has a small budget and you are requesting a full scholarship, the chance of getting admitted might be slim. While I was admitted to Yale, a need-blind university, with a full scholarship, I still got rejected from places like Middlebury and Colgate.
Making the list of universities is a challenging and nuanced process, and it is impossible to cover all the details in a short post. To this end, I would be glad to answer all of your questions in @freshmanchat.
