Former Commander of the Tibetan Military Region, 57-year-old Lieutenant General Wang Haijiang has been appointed Commander of the Xinjiang Military Region.
In conjunction with him, his deputy political commissar, Lieutenant General Yang Cheng, will provide assistance. The district is under the control of the PLA Western Command, which is responsible for the vast border region with Central Asian countries, including Afghanistan, where China is concerned about security and the threat of terrorism, as well as the western section of its border with India.
