Google has awarded $500 each to Google Store visitors, but they cannot use the money

Recently several changes have been made to the Google Store, one of which caused joy with further disappointment for many users. They thought they had been given $500, but couldn't use it.

The Google Store got a redesigned account menu when you click on your profile avatar at the top right of the page. The menu items ("Orders," "Preferred Help," "Subscriptions," "My Home Nest" and "Settings") got new icons.

The top right corner shows the total amount of "Balance in Google Store". If you have any amount in your Google Store wallet, the balance will be $500 ostensibly. As editor 9to5google writes, he had just over $2 of his own.

This amount is displayed correctly in the last step of the checkout process.

Google blocked more than a million viruses from entering its app store AND deleted accounts of rogue developers

Google said it was able to block more than a million mobile viruses targeting the Play Store.

The company claimed that the app store's automated anti-virus algorithms blocked 1.2 million viruses from accessing the service to infect mobile devices. This avoided billions of installations of viruses on smartphones.

Google also deleted 190,000 accounts of compromised developers and 500,000 inactive and abandoned accounts.

What should we expect from Google I/O?

"This year's program looks a little different," Google said of the event, where the announcement of the Pixel Watch, Pixel 6a and more will come to life.

The annual Google I/O conference is mainly for developers working with the Android ecosystem, but the search giant also often presents new hardware innovations and make announcements about its future products.

The event will start on May 11 with a speech by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, telling us about the company's future plans, environmental projects and privacy. Some believe we'll finally see the Pixel Watch smartwatch, as well as the Pixel 6a budget smartphone.

Perhaps we'll see new features and improvements to Google Assistant.

Google will allow to request removal of phone number from search results

Users can request the removal of other contact information. Google has decided to expand the ability to remove personal information from search results. If you don't want to see your phone number, email address and home address in these results, you can ask to have them removed.

Google will consider deletion requests so as not to inadvertently remove useful information. Contact information within public records on government websites and official sources will not be removed.

Google's parent company reports worse than expected for the first time in two years

Here's how the company's key numbers changed year over year, and here's what analysts expected:

Revenue - $68 billion (+23%), expectations - $68.1 billion;
Earnings per share - $24.6 (-6%), expectations - $25.9.
Alphabet's net income fell because of a revaluation of its own stock portfolio.

A year ago, investments in shares of other companies brought Alphabet almost $5 billion, but now the loss is about a billion.

At the same time, operating income, or operating profit, rose 22% to $20.1 billion. Operating margin remained the same at 30%.

Alphabet reported worse than expected for the first time in two years, that is, since the pandemic began.

Google's owner decided to bail out $70 billion worth of shares

Google's parent company, Alphabet, announced that its board of directors has approved a $70 billion stock buyback from investors.

The IT giant has significantly decided to accelerate its strategy to return investments to shareholders through buybacks. Alphabet also said it would consider the price of the securities and market conditions when deciding whether to buy back shares.

In 2021, Alphabet bought back more of its own stock (by $50 billion) than any other public company except Apple. A year earlier, the board had only approved $25 billion worth of stock purchases.

Google search engine users will be allowed to turn off tracking themselves

Google added a "deny all" button to a banner offering to accept all cookies, which allows users to opt out of all tracking files.

Users, however, were forced to accept cookies on behalf of the advertising business because of this button arrangement. The company was fined 150 million euros for this in France and was also given three months to fix the banner.

According to the company, the update is only available for French users for now, Google will extend it to other European countries in the future.

Google Messages no longer lowers battery: Pixel 6 users started getting the update

This was exactly what Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro users complained about, who just had to open the Messages app to trigger this error. Also, using Quick Tap to Snap puts the camera in suspension in the background, causing it to overheat and drain the battery.

Google communications manager Scott Westover says the problem has been identified and has already begun rolling out a fix for the bug.

Until the update arrives, you can use a quick workaround. Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Permissions > Camera and select Do Not Allow.

The European Union has adopted new content control rules for companies such as Google and Meta.

They require IT corporations to increase oversight of illegal content on their platforms and pay up to 0.1% of net annual profits to regulators who monitor compliance with the rules.

Companies now cannot place targeted ads if they focus on children or are based on personal information such as gender, race, and political and religious views.

Also, corporations must ensure that users are not misled and do not leave personal information to Internet companies.
