SATURDAY NOVEMBER 20

DON’T TAKE HIS NAME IN VAIN

Exodus 20:7

_7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain._

The third of the Ten Commandments forbids taking or using the Lord’s name in a manner that does not bring glory to God. God’s nature and attributes, the totality of His being, and especially His glory, are reflected in His name. Remember the children of Israel would not even mention His name. That is how serious they took the third of the Ten Commandments.

One common way to take the name of the Lord in vain is by swearing in His name. When someone says, “I swear by God”, that is taking the name of the Lord in vain because God has expressly commanded that we should not swear. Jesus said we should let our yes be yes and our No be No. You do not need to add God’s name if you are telling the truth.

If God has not said something to you and you say that God said it to you, you are taking His name in vain. People get excited and the next thing, they mention God’s name. Mentioning God’s name has become so casual with believers. That will not invoke the power that the name carries.

The unbelievers mention Jesus’ name sometimes when they are surprised at something, when they are excited at something, etc. The statement “O my God’ is common in the lips of unbelieving people. The believers use the “Jehovah” version. At every little thing the believer exclaims, “Jehovah”
Christians of all people ought to be extremely cautious about invoking God’s name to further their own status, interests, or whatever it might be in relation to themselves and to other Christians. We should use God’s name, title, etc. only in a manner that shows reverence, respect, and honor.

Prayer
1. Thank God when we mention the name Jesus every knee bows.
2. Pray that you will not mention the name of Jesus when nothing is at stake.
3. Father, please help me keep Your name in holiness and reverence always.

Declarations
The name of the Lord is a Strong Tower. The name of the Lord is powerful and power is released each time the name is mentioned in reverence. Therefore, I refuse to mention the name in vain. I declare that the name of the Lord will continue to receive the reverence it deserves in my heart and on my tongue in the name of Jesus.
