This is the concept that I came to realize very recently. If you think about it, we usually say a lot of words but deliver a message with very little meaning. A lot of the words we use are just mumbo-jumbo. If you want to get a high band score in either IELTS Speaking or Writing, you should focus more on the meaning and the delivery of your thoughts than the complexity of your words and what have you. After all, an educated native speaker can easily score a 9.0 in IELTS with zero preparation. Let the words do the job for you, but take care of the meaning yourself. This means that we need to make sure we use every single word automatically without having to think too much about it. To do that we should make a lot of examples using the words we learn from articles or podcasts.

2022-06-03 05:56:24 Useful chunks of language from the above speaking performance:

Part 1:

- appealing
- I don't exactly know why this is the case, but I think it has to do with ...
- tried + doing
- dauting task
- As far as I'm concerned
- bring about X
- an instrument of some kind
- with that in mind
- Like I said
- Not expert in that area
- It depends on the person in the first place

Part 2:

- couple of months ago
- all-beef diet
- took sb aback
- take up sth
- which I think has to do with
- Little do we know that
- for the better part of
- mind-boggling

Part 3:

- either taking a walk or running
- of great importance
- run the risk of ending up overweight
- lead a sedentary lifestyle
- it has its consequences
- for as long as we can
- I mean
- we are fine with the fact that
- sitting in one place for hours on end
- when in reality
- go in the direction of X
- slowly but surely
- we 'would'
- fast-paced
- juggle X and Y
- lag behind sth
- which is why
- in a way
- be held accountable for sth
- unless sub + verb, there is no way
- entice sb into doing sth
- promote X
- come up with a scheme to do X
- shoulder the responsibility of doing X
- go about sb's lives
- how miserable our lives are

2022-06-02 18:58:32 Let's debunk one myth: writing too many words than required lowers your score.

Your concern is reasonable in some sense, but let me expand on this matter. It's perfectly fine to write 200-250 words in Task 1, just as much it's not wrong to write 300-400 words in Task 2. The lower limit is 150 for the former and 250 words for the latter; there is no mention of the upper limit in the question paper.

However, some people seem to have come up with the reasoning that if you write too many words, you will be penalized, which is true in and of itself. Lower level students, that is 5.5-6.5, are recommended to write shorter sentences in part because they are likely to make more mistakes if they write too many words. This doesn't apply to higher level students, though. Some tasks 1s require you to write 200+ words because there are too many key features to cover. What will you do in this case? Miss one of the key features? If you do that, you will probably end up scoring 5.0 in Task Achievement (view the band descriptors for further details).

To sum up, you are generally recommended to write less wordy sentences, especially if you are not at a high level. That said, don't fall for mediocre unprofessional advice that the size of your overview paragraph should not be too long. What is too long anyways? Nothing but something relevant.

2022-06-02 17:16:25 Here is my overview paragraph for the above task 1:

Overall, the largest proportion of people donating money was the middle aged in both years, while the young adults were the least generous of all. It is also clear that those aged up to 50 were more generous at first; however, fewer older people would give money to charity. These figures were reversed in 2010.
