ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (b. ʿAwf) said: “Let your mother bereave you! Not a single person after ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) will take power (in rulership), without the people criticising him.”

فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ! إِنَّهُ لَنْ يَلِيَ هَذَا الأَمْرَ أَحَدٌ بَعْدَ عُمَرَ إِلاَّ لاَمَهُ النَّاسُ.
