Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm narrated to us: From Ayyūb: From Ibn Abī Mulaykah, who said: a man asked Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) about the Āyah: {A Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count} [32:5].
So Ibn ʿAbbās replied: “And what about [the Āyah]: {A Day, the extent of which is fifty thousand years} [70:4]?“ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: فَمَا {يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ} [المعارج: 4]؟
The man responded: ”I asked you so that you would inform me.“ قَالَ الرَّجُلُ: إِنَّمَا سَأَلْتُكَ لَتُحَدِّثَنِّي.
Ibn ʿAbbās finally said: ”They are two days that Allah mentioned in His Book; Allah knows best about them."
So he (ie: Ibn ʿAbbās) hated to speak about the Book of Allah concerning that which he did not know.
