ʿĀʿishah wrote to Muʿāwiyyah:
أَخْبَرَكُمْ أَبُو عُمَرَ بْنُ حَيَوَيْهِ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ الْوَرَّاقُ قَالَا: أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ الْوَرْدِ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ، قَالَ: كَتَبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ: أَنِ اكْتُبِي إِلَيَّ بِكِتَابٍ تُوصِينِي فِيهِ، وَلَا تُكْثِرِي عَلَيَّ، فَكَتَبَتْ: عَنْ عَائِشَةَ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ:

Salamun ʿalayk.
سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ،

Amma baʿd (as for what follows):
أَمَّا بَعْدُ،

I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whoever gains the Pleasure of Allah by the anger of the people (ie: thereby gains their anger), Allah suffices him of the people’s troubles.
فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «مَنِ الْتَمَسَ رِضَا اللَّهِ بِسَخَطِ النَّاسِ كَفَاهُ اللَّهُ مُؤْنَةَ النَّاسِ،

And whoever gains the pleasure of the people by the Anger of Allah (ie: in the process he gains His Anger), then Allah leaves him to the people.”
وَمَنِ الْتَمَسَ رِضَا النَّاسِ بِسَخَطِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَكَّلَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلَى النَّاسِ»،

Wa-Salāmu ʿalayk.’
وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ
