ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Mahdī said: I asked Shuʿbah (b. al-Ḥajjāj) to explain allaḏī yutraku hadituhu (ie: who is the person whose narratives should be abandoned)?
He replied: “man yuttahamu bi ʿl-kaḏib (ie: a person who is blamed of lying), قَالَ: مَنْ يُتَّهَمُ بِالْكَذِبِ،
man yukthiru ʿl-ġalat (ie: who makes many mistakes),
who errs in a narrative which is agreed upon by all and still does not blame himself for this error and remains adamant on his mistake,
And a person who rawá ʿan al-maʿrufīn bimā la yaʿrifuhu ʿl-maʿrufūn (ie: narrates from known people what these known people do not even know).”
