Modern people are walking contradictions.

They are awestruck by the beauty of the old world and want to preserve it, yet despise the beliefs that fueled what they built.

In the case of Notre Dame the overwhelming majority of people did not want to see it collapse it in the fire.

They may have been unable to articulate it, but they knew that something sacred was almost lost.

I want to go back to a time when artists carved stone so perfectly that they were accused of alchemy.

Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino, 1753. A marble sculpture so remarkable it was popularly stated that it must have been created by draping a veil over the figure and using alchemy to turn it to stone.
