French winemakers saw champagne law negotiated undermined - Reuters.

The law, which allows the definition of "champagne" to be used only in relation to the products of Russian companies, undermined two decades of negotiations between Russia and the EU, the French Committee for Champagne (Comite Champagne) said.

“The Champagne Committee regrets that this law does not guarantee that Russian consumers have clear and transparent information about the origin and characteristics of wine,” said co-presidents of the committee Maxim Toubar and Jean-Marie Barillere.

In a statement, the Champagne Committee added that it also called on French and European Union diplomats to change the law.

They also noted that the name Champagne, which refers to the region in France where French champagne originates, has legal protection in 120 countries. In this connection, the committee urged to temporarily stop the supply of wines to Russia.
