Chillon Castle #Switzerland
Chillon Castle is a historical monument and a former defensive structure on a small rocky island in Lake Geneva.
After the fortified dwelling became a museum, crowds of travelers come here every year.
Along with ordinary tourists, the complex attracts famous romantic writers. At one time, the historical monument was admired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Gustave Flaubert, Maria Edgeworth.
George Byron was so impressed by what he saw that in 1816 he wrote the poem "The Prisoner of Chillon". The work is based on the true story of the Swiss patriot and historian Francois Bonivard, imprisoned in the castle. The events described took place from 1530 to 1536.
