A battery has been created that will last 28 thousand years
Nuclear waste is used for its manufacture.
The development was presented by a startup from San Francisco Nano Diamond Battery (NDB). Panel nanodiamonds were used to create the battery. Researchers grow miniature diamonds using chemical vapor deposition. In this process, gases at extremely high temperatures cause carbon to crystallize on the substrate material. The company combines the resulting nanodiamonds with radioactive isotopes from nuclear waste.
Such batteries can even be used in spacecraft so that they work for years without recharging. Nano Diamond Battery startup wants to start selling the first diamond battery devices in 2022.
Most importantly, the cost of such a battery, as promised by the NDB, will be comparable or even cheaper than lithium-ion batteries of the corresponding capacity.
