Niantic's Brian Rose and Anthony Maas gave a talk yesterday at the Augmented World Expo 2021 about the integration of Niantic Lightship into Ingress. During this talk, there was a sneak peek at upcoming features that will encourage scanning.
"Scanner Crates" have already been playtested and are said to be an AR geocache, which you can apparently find with the camera at portals. They contain "rare in-game items."
Niantic is also currently working on "community goals," which can be experienced together with others. The rewards of these "shared experiences" will also be shared.
How these two features will be combined with portal scanning is not yet known. It is also unknown when these features will be officially announced.
