Thanks for the great advice here Will, I started with on old, barely- running MacBook, then found a great i7 Dell laptop. Linux Mint runs like a race car on this thing- JP is right- it is my new tech happy place.

I put calyxos on my pixel 3a almost a year ago, i do not regret it at all, i can use the alternate app store that has everything the regular one has. totally de-googled, etc and comes with all the microG, FOSS, etc modifications you would have to do manually on other mobile OS.

Just take it 1 step at a time. Even if it takes a year. Look for a refurbished Dell on Ebay, Newegg or Amazon. It will be easy switching to Linux if you can get a PC up and running with Linux while you keep your existing computer to slowly transfer your activities over. For your phone, start looking at videos on degoogled phones. Eventually you can buy one and sell your iPhone.

Newegg has used Dell latitudes for $200 with 500gb drives and webcams. These work great for Linux. Each one converted to Linux and put back into the crowd is one less Windows user.
