Corporal Yokoi Shoichi went into the jungles of Guam after the Japanese surrender in 1945. He lived in the woods for 28 years. In 1972 he was discovered by shrimp fishermen.

The corporal's first phrase upon his return: "I am painfully ashamed to have come back alive".
