When a person embraced Islam, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to teach him how to observe prayer and then commanded him to supplicate in these words:« اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَاهْدِنِي وَعَافِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي »
(Allahumma-ghfirli warhamni wahdini wa-afini warzuqni)
"O Allah, grant me pardon and have mercy upon me and direct me to the path of righteousness and grant me protection and provide me sustenance."

A man came to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! what should I say when I ask of my Lord?"He (ﷺ) said: "Say:
« اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَعَافِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي »
(Allahumma-ghfirli warhamni wa-afini warzuqni)
Oh Allah, forgive me and have mercy on me and keep me safe and sound and grant me provision."
and
he (ﷺ) held his fingers together except the thumb and said: "These words sum up (good) for you in this world and in the Hereafter."
