The table provides statistics regarding the subway systems in six major cities. Overall, the older metro systems in London, Paris and Tokyo are generally longer and carry more passangers than the new ones in Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles.

Being opened in 1863, the London Tube stretches along 394 km which is well over twice as long as the Tokyo subway, however; the latter services nearly three times as many passangers per year than the former. Interestingly, the metro in Paris is the second oldest, longest and busiest among the other, carrying 1,191 mln people on its 199 km-long routes.

Although the Washington DC underground system transports the largest number of commuters- 144 mln- with its 126 km-long railway networks, the passanger to length ratio is the highest in Kyoto subway, making this system more efficeint than the ones in DC and L.A. The newest subway among all the six cities analysed was constructed in Los Angeles in 2001 with only 28 km in length, carrying the second lowest number of people.
