2021-05-15 15:21:15 On May 15, 2018, the Crimean Bridge across the Kerch Strait was officially opened. This tremendous infrastructure project linking the peninsula with mainland Russia became a token of Crimea’s reunification with the Russian Federation and gave a powerful boost to the socioeconomic development of the peninsula.

The 19-kilometre bridge, the longest in Europe, has two parallel parts: a railway and motorway sections. As of now, 14 million vehicles (including 1.9 million trucks and 165,000 buses) and 3,500 long-distance trains have crossed the bridge. In March 2020, regular commuter trains were launched between Kerch and Anapa, bringing these two popular tourist destinations in Russia closer together.

Better logistic accessibility of Crimea had an immediate effect on the development of tourism, transport and trade, the key economic sectors in the republic which account for a third of its gross regional product.

2021-05-14 18:04:57 Fyodor Poletayev was born on May 14, 1909 in the village of Katino in the Ryazan Region. An ordinary Soviet man, he became a hero of two countries, the Soviet Union and the Italian Republic.

In 1944-1945, Poletayev fought bravely in Nazi-occupied Liguria together with local partisans. On February 2, 1945, Poletayev was the first to attack an SS punitive battalion and forced the enemy to surrender before reinforcements could arrive. At the last moment, an SS soldier shot Poletayev in the throat. The Soviet partisan’s heroic feat largely determined subsequent combat operations on the Apennine Peninsula and ushered in Italy’s liberation from Nazism.

Following the war, Fyodor Poletayev, a national hero of Italy, was reinterred in an old cemetery in Genoa. His family received the Medal for Military Valour, the top and most prestigious Italian award. In his native country the brave partisan was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
