Beggar Philosopher's Wisdom

I have an acquaintance who goes by the nickname Philosopher. He's been out of his mind for a long time, though likes to read a lot and talk as much as he can.

He's always quoting someone when we meet him at the soup kitchen for the homeless.

The philosopher found a book on finance, money , and business in a dumpster with other people's thoughts and citations. It was a dirty, shabby pocketbook with no cover or title.

The philosopher carried it around with him for a long time and read it aloud incessantly. Once he had it all memorized, he gave it to me.

It contains valuable stuff, he said, and you can use some of the quotes for the channel. I'll give it a try.

Rock out!

If you wanna know poverty, never think about tomorrow.

A rainy-day fund? A financial safety cushion? Nope. the would-be Beggar Investor doesn't even think about that.

He burns through everything he earns and more. He never tortures himself with questions about what to live on tomorrow. Saving money for him is uninteresting, boring and unworthy.

And a pension for him is some kind of terrible fairy tale.

Although there are so many poor old people around, but you as a future Beggar Investor get such an unpleasant tale is not about you.

That's what I thought too...

Do you live for today or think about tomorrow?

Where I lost money in 2021. Alibaba

It would seem that such a reliable Chinese giant with strong fundamentals and what I thought were bright prospects like Alibaba would not let me down.

Yes, that Alibaba, the e-commerce company and much more, was another disappointment for me as an investor. I happily bought the stock at $260, and its price ended up sliding to almost $110.

Down by more than half! Imagine that! Alibaba! Minus $150!

Where I lost money in 2021. Vipshop

Another sad story happened with the stock of a Chinese company selling discounted branded merchandise online, Vipshop.

I was buying these stocks for about $43 apiece. After that, the price went down to about $8 to $8.5 a piece. I cried, losing money.

Where I lost money in 2021. TAL

Things have been even worse with buying individual Chinese stocks. As an example, I recall with shudder the shares of TAL Education Group.

This company offered educational and tutoring services. When the price of TAL stock dropped from $90 to $80 in February, I decided to take advantage of the correction and invested a large sum in these securities.

The fall went on, and I believed the best and averaged out. But China began to regulate the education services industry, and everything fell apart. Now a share of TAL is worth $3.8 to $4.

A cautionary tale that ended in a crushing margin call.

Where I lost money in 2021

The year 2021 was the one in which I lost the last of the money I had . In fact, it wasn't even my money anymore; it was borrowed funds.

Back then I was still being lent money. It won't work now. I will only tell you about some of my failed investments.

I particularly remember China. I bought Chinese stocks in huge quantities. With borrowed funds and great leverage. I was confident that a strong Chinese economy would grow. I bought funds into the Chinese market at the beginning of the year. Since then, the funds have sagged 30-40 percent.
