2021-10-07 20:26:45 What is Electrostatics?

Study of stationary electric charges at rest is known as electrostatics. An electroscope is used to detect the charge on a body. Pith ball electroscope is used to detect a charge and to know the nature of the charge. Gold leaf electroscope which was invented by Bennet detects a charge and the nature of the charge and determines the quantity of the charge

Conductors, Insulators, and Semiconductors

A body in which electric charge can easily flow through is called conductor (e.g. metals).

A body in which electric charge cannot flow is called insulator or dielectric. (e.g. glass, wool, rubber, plastic, etc.)

Substances which are intermediate between conductors and insulators are called semiconductors. (e.g. silicon, germanium, etc)

Dielectric Strength: It is the minimum field intensity that should be applied to break down the insulating property of insulator.

Dielectric strength of air = 3 x 106 V/m

Dielectric strength of Teflon = 60 × 106 Vm–1

The maximum charge a sphere can hold depends on the size and dielectric strength of the medium in which the sphere is placed.

The maximum charge density of a sphere of radius ‘R’ in terms of electric intensity E at a distance in free space is Eε0(R/r)2.

When the electric field in the air exceeds its dielectric strength air molecules become ionized and are accelerated by fields and the air becomes conducting.

Universal rules of nomenclature are as follows :

1. Biological names are generally in Latin and written in italics. They are Latinised or derived from Latin irrespective of their
origin.

2. The first word in a biological name represents the genus while the second component denotes the specific epithet.

3. Both the words in a biological
name, when handwritten, are separately underlined, or printed in italics to indicate their Latin
origin.

4. The first word denoting the genus starts with a capital letter while the specific epithet starts with a small letter. It can be illustrated with the example of Mangifera indica.

2021-10-07 07:18:19 Important Points of NCERT -

A mere 0.1 per cent impurities make domestic sewage unfit for human use :

Impurities 0.1%

1. Suspended solids, e.g., sand, silt and clay.

2. Colloidal material, e.g., Fecal matter, bacteria, cloth and paper fibres.

3. Dissolved materials, e.g., nutrients (nitrate, ammonia, phosphate, sodium,
calcium).

Daphnia is the indicator of BOD.

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), the world's most problematic aquatic weed, also called 'Terror of Bengal'.

Minamata disease is cause in humans in Japan by biomagnification of mercury (Hg)

The concentration of DDT is increased at successive trophic levels; say if it starts at 0.003 ppb (ppb = parts per billion) in water, it can ultimately can reach 25 ppm (ppm = part per million) in fish- eating birds, through biomagnification.
