BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine Does Not Impact the Honeymoon Phase in Type 1 Diabetes: A Case Report

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

Recently, there has been an increasing concern that COVID-19 vaccination may trigger autoimmune phenomena.

We describe the case of a 24-year-old young Italian man with T1D who received two doses of the BNT162b2 mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech) COVID-19 vaccine during a prolonged honeymoon phase.

Quercetin as a JAK–STAT inhibitor: a potential role in solid tumors and neurodegenerative diseases

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

Currently, the majority of JAK–STAT-targeting drugs are still at preclinical stages.

Meanwhile, a variety of plant polyphenols, especially quercetin, exert their inhibitory effects on the JAK–STAT pathway through known and unknown mechanisms.

Quercetin has shown prominent inhibitory effects on the JAK–STAT pathway in terms of anti-inflammatory and antitumor activity, as well as control of neurodegenerative diseases.

This review discusses the pharmacological effects of quercetin on the JAK–STAT signaling pathway in solid tumors and neurodegenerative diseases.

The promising therapeutic effects of metformin on metabolic reprogramming of cancer-associated fibroblasts in solid tumors

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

The cross-feeding and metabolic coupling of CAFs and tumor cells are also affected by metformin. Therefore, the importance of metabolic reprogramming of stromal cells and also the pivotal effects of metformin on TME and oncometabolites signaling pathways have been reviewed in this study.

Serum and plasma levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in individuals with eating disorders (EDs): a systematic review and meta-analysis

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is essential for neuronal survival, differentiation, development, and plasticity. Evidence suggests that fluctuations in peripheral levels (i.e., plasma or serum) of BDNF are associated with eating behaviors.

Nevertheless, the findings are inconsistent. The purpose of this study is to determine if serum or plasma levels of BDNF are altered in individuals with eating disorders (EDs) compared to controls.

Lower BDNF levels are associated with EDs.

Possible role of autophagy induced by COVID-19 in cancer progression, chemo-resistance, and tumor recurrence

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

Studies suggest that cancer patients are one of the most susceptible populations to experience severe COVID-19 and death.

Targeting autophagy-related signaling pathways and cellular and molecular processes could be a potentially promising therapeutic approach for cancer patients with COVID-19.
