Assalammualaikum wbt and hi everyone, a lot of friends have been asking me how to be good in English. To be honest, I am still in the process of learning and improving my English. Too often, I also make mistakes, especially in grammar. We're all in the process of learning.
But, I'll share the tips that I practice in learning and improving my English. May it be beneficial to all of us. Insya-Allah.
First of all,
know why you need to learn English. Back then, I used to learn English just because I wanna pass that subject in my exams; UPSR, PT3, SPM.
But then I was asking myself " why do I need to learn English? "
I was wondering and questioning myself until one day, I realised something.
Lots of precious knowledge can be gained when we understand English. You can learn physics, mathematics, and many more as everything is almost in English these days. But one thing that opened my eyes is that with a good understanding of the English language I can learn more about my Deen, as many " Kuliyah " and Islamic books are available in the English language, making it understandable by people all across the world.
We can use it to spread Khayr (goodness) and ilm (knowledge).
When you write, you wanna produce something that is not only impactful and inspiring but also can be understood by many people despite having a different mother tongue.
With the English language, you can spread words that inform and inspire people all over the world.
Next, to be able to communicate with people from different places.
Words are beautiful tools to transfer information and connect people.
By having a good grasp of English, we can communicate with other people from different backgrounds & places.
Okay, that was quite a lengthy explanation from me on the purposes of learning English from my perspective.
Now let's go through the tips ( the tips are applicable even if you're from a beginner level ) :
Know the basic words in English (such as cat, football, happy, etc).
(Having a dictionary is truly recommended)
Understand basic grammar (I used to learn through grammar reference books but now, with many videos teaching grammar available on YouTube, it helps a lot).
Write a lot. (I mean, not just write the essay for your homework, but write simply because you wanna write. For example, you can write a diary, letter or blog in English.)
Listen a lot (to podcasts, songs, but please be selective of the songs that you are listening to. Don't listen to songs that have bad messages or cursing words in them. What we listen to will influence who we are.
I love to listen to Nasyeed and motivational songs in English. Not only that it helps me to polish my English listening skills but also help me to calm & energise my soul.)
Read a lot (when you read, you'll learn new words & see how sentences are structured. This will help us to be more familiar with English words)
Speak in English (when you speak, you'll apply all the knowledge that you have learned, the words, the grammar, etc). But, of course, sometimes we made mistakes by pronouncing some words incorrectly, and then some people laugh at us. Well, you shouldn't be ashamed of that. You should be proud of how brave you are to try.
Remember, mistakes are proof that you are trying.
Yes, I know that those tips seem to be very cliche but that is it. Those are the tips that I applied and it has helped me to improve a lot. There are no other shortcuts in learning & improving English. It just doesn't happen overnight.
It's an accumulation of hard work and effort for years.
Here some bonus tips :
Ask for help from others
-don't be afraid to ask for help from your teachers and friends if there is something that you don't know or unclear about.
Teach others
- yes, teaching others can help you to improve your English. You don't even need to know every grammar rule or the definition for all the words in the dictionary to teach others. Just share the things that you have learned. For example, today you learned about the idiom "as happy as a clam".
