Issue #410 | Paul Graham on the Lies We Tell Kids

In yesterday’s issue of One Daily Nugget, we broached the topic of parenting. Let’s build on that today with a provocative essay by Paul Graham on the lies we tell kids.

This topic is important in two ways: First, if we conspire to lie to kids, we should at least be mindful of the reasons. While some of our lies may genuinely have our kids’ well-being at heart, we might, upon closer inspection, realize that others are rather self-serving.

Second, by identifying the lies we tell kids, we might be able to clear our heads of the lies we’ve been told ourselves. (Better late than never.)

Issue #409 | Are Today’s Parents Overprotective of Their Children?

“Over the last 50 years,” Brett and Kate McKay from The Art of Manliness write in today’s nugget, “the radius of children’s ‘independent mobility’ has shrunk by as much as 90%.”

This is but one reflection of the more protective style parents have been adopting in recent years. What’s behind this shift? And are modern parents perhaps overdoing it a bit?

Issue #408 | Why and How to Have Deeper Conversations With Strangers

When talking to strangers, do you typically default to superficial small talk? In today’s nugget, Summer Allen, writing for Greater Good, points to recent studies suggesting that we tend to underestimate the level of interest by strangers in more personal revelations. What’s more, research suggests that we benefit emotionally from the deeper connections that we are bound to make when we open ourselves up a bit more.

Read on and try it out next time you find yourself chatting up your seatmate on a bus or plane!
