[General] morning swim by maxine kumin...I am obsessed with the flow of this one.
Morning SwimInto my empty head there comea cotton beach, a dock wherefromI set out, oily and nudethrough mist, in chilly solitude. There was no line, no roof or floorto tell the water from the air.Night fog thick as terry clothclosed me in its fuzzy growth.I hung my bathrobe on two pegs.I took the lake between my legs.Invaded and invader, Iwent overhand on that flat sky.Fish twitched beneath me, quick and tame.In their green zone they sang my nameand in the rhythm of the swimI hummed a two-four-time slow hymn.I hummed "Abide With Me." The beatrose in the fine thrash of my feet, rose in the bubbles I put outslantwise, trailing through my mouth. My bones drank water; water fellthrough all my doors. I was the wellthat fed the lake that met my seain which I sang "Abide With Me."—Maxine Kumin
