There are eight billion of us! Should we be afraid that the resources of the planet will not be enough for everyone?

The United Nations has announced the birth of the eight billionth inhabitant of the earth. Obviously, this moment is very tentative - it is unlikely that anyone can actually count everyone, including the inhabitants of Africa and the densely populated countries of Asia.
